DePuy Synthes launches DYNACORD suture for rotator cuff surgery

On 20th June, DePuy Synthes launched the DYNACORD Suture, for use in rotator cuff surgery, at the San Diego Shoulder Institute’s 35th Annual COurse. This is a new product that’s sure to revolutionise recovery from invasive shoulder surgeries.

Rotator cuff injuries occur in the muscles and supporting tendons in the shoulder through wear and tear, or through sports or trauma. An estimated 25 percent of people over the age of 60 have suffered a full tear of the rotator cuff, meaning the tendon no longer fully attaches to the head of the humerus, the upper arm bone. This causes weakness and pain, and can really interfere with a patient’s quality of life.

Surgical intervention is carried out if other treatment options haven’t worked, and either keyhole or open surgical methods are used. The muscle tissue is re-attached to the upper arm bone using sutures, with the aim of reducing pain and restoring mobility for patients. Recovery from rotator cuff surgery is usually long and painful, and in some cases can even fail due to loss of suture tension. This means that gaps form in the muscle tissue, or between the tissue and bone. Sutures that have no flexibility are unable to move and shape with the body throughout healing.

The DYNACORD suture system has been developed to address these currently unmet patient needs. It responds to changes in repair tension, promoting stability during the crucial times of recovery. So how does it work?

DYNACORD is an innovative system that’s designed with the body’s healing mechanisms in mind. The slim, thread-like sutures comprise two outer sheaths of braided fibres, with a core of silicone and salt. Upon insertion, the salt dissolves in the body, leaving the silicone with a porous structure that can then fill with fluid from the body. As the suture then expands outward, it shortens and maintains tissue to bone compression, known as approximation.

DYNACORD Suture is currently available on limited launch in the United States, with full launch expected for the third quarter of 2018.
